An exceptionally versatile artist, Andreas Bauer Kanabas sings important roles in the serious bass repertoire in eight different languages. Verdi and Wagner roles take up a large part of his repertoire, as do Russian roles. The wide range and legato culture of his voluminous voice make him a basso cantante with great versatility.
His repertoire includes Filippo II. (in Italian and French), Zaccaria, Fiesco, De Silva, Banco and Padre Guardiano, as well as Gurnemanz, King Marke, King Henry, Landgrave Hermann, Pogner and Daland.
He has also sung the title role in Bluebeard’s Castle, Vodnik/Rusalka, Gremin/Eugen Onegin, Ibn Hakia and King René/Iolanta, Boris/Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Pimen/BorisGodunov, Claggart/Billy Budd, Mephisto in Gounod’s Faust, Escamillo/Carmen, as well as Sarastro, Osmin, Komtur and Baron Ochs/Rosenkavalier with great success.
Andreas Bauer Kanabas sings on international stages such as the Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera in Covent Garden London, Opéra Bastille de Paris, Bolshoi in Moscow, Teatro Real Madrid, Seattle Opera, New National Theatre in Tokyo, Teatro Municipal Santiago de Chile, Opéra de Lyon, at the Opéra du Capitole Toulouse, the National Opera Riga, the Semperoper Dresden, Stateopera Hamburg and at all three major opera houses in Berlin.
He has been a member of the Frankfurt Opera ensemble since 2013.
In the 2024/25 season, he sang Daland at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and will make his debut at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in a new production as Boris in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and at his home opera house in Frankfurt as Gurnemanz. He will sing King Henry at the end of the season in Kaohsiung / Taiwan.
In the 22/23 season he made his debut as Pogner in Wagner’s Meistersinger at the Frankfurt Opera and also sang this role at the Spring Festival in Tokyo and under Christian Thieleman at the Semperoper Dresden. As De Silva in Verdi’s Ernani, he guested in Antwerp and Ghent. He made his very successful debut as Baron Ochs / Rosenkavalier at the Irish National Opera in Dublin
During the Covid19 shutdown in 2020, Andreas Bauer Kanabas had the privilege of singing the role of Vodnik in Dvorak’s Rusalka at the Teatro Real Madrid. He also had great success as Rocco/Fidelio at the Hamburg State Opera and alongside Jonas Kaufmann in concert performances in summer 2022.
In September 2021, his highly acclaimed solo CD Love and Despair (OhemsClassics) was released with Romantic bass arias, conducted by Karsten Januschke. In February 2023 his first, highly praised song CD was released – Franz Schubert’s Schwanengesang with Daniel Heide as pianist.
